Group Decision-Making

Group decision-making methods, such as the Delphi (Bregar, 2019) and the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) (Mohd‘Ammar Ihsan & et al., 2022), are crucial in harnessing collective intelligence. The Delphi method is a structured communication process that entails multiple questionnaires or surveys with selected experts or stakeholders. It allows for anonymous feedback and encourages convergence toward consensus. In contrast, NGT combines brainstorming and voting techniques to facilitate idea generation and prioritization within a group. While both methods aim to gather diverse perspectives and ensure equal participation, Delphi emphasizes expert opinions and adaptation through iterative rounds. In contrast, NGT emphasizes involvement and transparency throughout the discussion.

Brainstorming, consensus decision-making, and multi-voting are additional group decision-making methods that offer unique approaches. Brainstorming is an open and creative process that fosters idea generation without judgment. It encourages free thinking and allows the group to explore various possibilities. Conversely, consensus decision-making aims to reach an agreement or consensus among group members, considering the concerns and preferences of all participants. This method places great importance on open dialogue and deliberation. On the other hand, multi-voting involves allocating a limited number of votes to options and prioritizing them based on the group's preferences. Its simplicity and quick execution make it suitable for efficiently narrowing down a list of ideas or solutions.

When considering the optimal application of these group decision-making methods, matching each method with the specific decision-making context is vital. The Delphi method's reliance on expert opinions and its iterative nature make it ideal for complex problems requiring a deep understanding of the subject matter. NGT, with its focus on transparent idea generation and equal participation, is well-suited for situations where group cohesion and individual contributions play vital roles. Brainstorming is most effective when creativity and idea generation are paramount in the initial decision-making. Consensus decision-making is valuable when stakeholder buy-in and agreement are critical to the success of the decision.
